BOC Elite Miles World Mastercard!
Wednesday, October 3, 2018 @ October 03, 2018

Was checking online for the best miles card to get as we are going to do some major spending and its a waste to just get the usual credit card points for our spending.

Saw a write up on the BOC Elite Miles World Mastercard and was really interested as there's an on-going promotion of 1.5 miles per $1 local spending and 5 miles per $1 overseas spending (online spending with payment in foreign currency also considered!). Sounds like a really good deal and it ends 31 December 2018! Plus, from what I understand, there's no cap on the number of miles you get.
Also, you do not need to pay the annual fees in order to get a card with better miles rate which is really great!

How does it work?
Basically, every $1 local spending gives you 4.5 BOC points. Of which, 3 BOC points translates to 1 mile. Hence, every $1 would give you 1.5 miles.
However, there is a $30 translation charge to miles, so do accumulate your points before changing!

How to apply?
They do not actually have an online application. Do fill up this form and mail it out to get your card. Heard that the card takes around a month to come, so remember to apply in time before making your purchases!

FlexiRoam experience
Wednesday, September 19, 2018 @ September 19, 2018

So, we book our flights to Kaoshiung from Scoot and they were running a promotion with FlexiRoam to offer free overseas wifi for Flexiroam's Starter pack!

According to the email sent by scoot, it offers us 1GB of mobile roaming data to use at our destination.

When we went to redeem it at their website, they stated that this redemption is for the starter pack.

The starter pack includes the following:
- ~50,000 instant messages (text only) OR ~550 emails (send / receive)
- ~200 photo uploads on social media OR ~30minutes internet voice calls
- ~1 hour of web browsing OR ~5 hours of map navigation

Shipping costs us USD5.10 for 2 of the cards.

The sim cards arrived really quickly, like within a few business days which was good.
Though technically, its not a sim card but like an accessory to add on top of your sim card so there is no need to remove it. You just have to set it up using their app and follow the step by step instructions which was clear but not so clear.

The experience
When we were in Kaoshiung, it took several attempts for us to try to connect to the internet. We had to first connect ourselves to a WiFi before we could connect using the Flexiroam sim, which was funny because this should work like a roaming service?

In addition, the network was limited to a few networks available so you have to make sure that your phone is connected to their partner networks else you would not be able to connect to the internet.
Also, they would not inform you once the 1GB is used up unless you whatsapp them and then they would be able to check for you. Even their app requires internet to start up which doesn't make sense when you would not have any internet to use first?

I also had a shock when I came back and my telco billed me data roaming usage for the days that i used Flexiroam.

All in all, I would not use Flexiroam again to avoid unnecessary issues which can be avoided with either buying a local sim card or getting a WiFi egg.
Uya 四代目菊川 Japanese Unagi Restaurant
Saturday, May 19, 2018 @ May 19, 2018

The bf was having unagi cravings so we headed to try out Uya! There were 3 choices initially which of course included Man Man and the newly opened Unagiya Ichinoji. Man Man was out of the question because the queue would totally make me extremely famished and frustrated.

Did some further research on the latter and read some interested facts about the source of their eels from ieatishootipost. Unagiya Ichinoji's eels are sourced from Indonesia farmed eels which helps them to keep the pricing competitive as compared to the other 2 unagi speciality restaurants. Good for the future but for now, I'll try out Man Man and Uya first before the prices surge and their eel sources turn really low.

Why Uya instead of Man Man?
Firstly, it accepts reservations! Yay :) But alas, do not try making reservations just one day in advance, they are fully booked for the 7pm slots and you might not even get a 6pm slot if you are heading there in a large group. So do remember to call for seats at least a week in advance!
Secondly, the quality of the eels are comparable to Man Man which is like a YES already.
Thirdly and lastly, the queue there moves really fast so there is kindly a non-existent queue for couples or if you go in pairs.

The menu

Saw quite a few people ordering the sashimi set and was rather tempted to get it. But some reviewers on Burpple mentioned that it be best to stick with unagi there. So here's what we had, 1 Hitsumabushi (Large) for the bf and 1 Unagi box for me.

The difference between the two is that the Hitsumabushi's eel is about half the portion of the unagi box and it is nicely chopped plus it also includes condiments and dashi for the 3 methods of savouring the crisped skin and tender eel meat.

Hitsumabushi (Signature) [M $35++ /  L $48++]
Chopped up Eel served with Condiments, Broth, Soup and Pickles

There are 3 traditional recommended ways of enjoying it as per stated.
1. Taking the unagi and enjoying it with the sauce lathered rice. (PS for those who love sauce, they provide a bottle of eel sauce on each table for you to splash as much as you like)
2. Add in some rice and unagi into the bowl provided and place the spring onions, seaweed and wasabi (Yes, you did not see wrongly. It is wasabi) and mix them together. Surprisingly, wasabi went really well with the unagi and I really liked this way of enjoying my unagi with rice.
3. Add some dashi into the unagi with rice and eat up. Not really my type of unagi.

Unagi Rice Box [$46++]

I prefer the unagi box as the portion of the unagi is almost doubled and though its not chopped, you could use your chopsticks to cut the unagi and when you lift it up, the tender meat of the unagi seems to bounce off. My mouth is salivating as I am writing this.

Niku Kappo
Friday, March 16, 2018 @ March 16, 2018

Niku (Beef in Japanese) Kappo is a Japanese restaurant specialising in beef. MEAT. The essence of life.

Arrived at the restaurant around 8.30pm-ish on a Friday night. It was packed but there were still seats available for the both of us! Which was really great cause we were famished. There's an iPad for you to select the number of people for your table and a queue number would be issued. We were really excited about it as the beef display at the payment counter looked really alluring.

Straight to the meal then! As we patiently await our food, a complimentary serving of sake mojito was sent to us (none was given for minors as seen at the table next to ours).

To the land of smiles!
Thursday, August 17, 2017 @ August 17, 2017

Off to Bangkok this afternoon!
First thing after arriving at the airport and picking up my luggage, wifi!

SIM cards
There're several telcos to choose from here and they're nicely situated just after you've left the exit door. Their prices are more or less or even the same starting from THB299 (7 days).
1. AIS
We chose this cause it was the nearest to where we are at.
Price list is as follows:
You'd have to show them your passport to register the card. They would also help you to set up the SIM card too.

2. Telenor Group
Only managed to see the THB299 for 7 days with free THB100 calls and sms.
3. Truemove

Wifi egg
For wifi egg services, we saw one at the basement of the airport where you go to take the train to the city. However, prices are pretty steep and it is NOT recommend to take up the wifi egg from bkk even if you're here with a group. A much better choice would be the changi recommends wifi egg (not a sponsored post). Prices for 4D3N to bkk is S$14 for the changi wifi egg, as compared to this one here, which costs 250 baht/day.
The price list is as follows
And there's also the deposit section
Totally not worth getting this. May as well get the SIM cards and be connected right through your phone without the fear of the egg running out of battery.

Airport FREE wifi
Yes, there's free wifi in the airport! Like yay! What everyone's looking for whenever they're overseas and do not have data. However, quite a few of these free wifi actually requires your passport number to sign up for this free 2 hours wifi. Didn't sound legit to me to want to give up my passport number (I'm a more paranoid person generally).
But, for this True wifi, it's being endorsed by the airport through its information touch screen panels! So, I believe it's a more trustworthy choice.

Step by step instructions were given too!
So there's no need to worry about data once you reach BKK's airport!

JB - Paik's pan, Diagon Alley, D'shanghai and transformers!
Monday, August 14, 2017 @ August 14, 2017

On the first day of July 2017, we made our way to our ever popular neighbour!
Heading to JB on a sat is pretty deadly. Having to queue for the immigration is already one major obstacle, not to mention the causeway jam and the ultimate queue at the msia's customs. We reached SG customs around 10+ and only cleared at 11:50. That's the longest I took to clear SG customs. Usually it takes 45 min max. After which is the queue for the bus to cross the causeway.
Most of the time, there'll be no seats. So people who queued to the front and realise that they wouldn't have any seats would wait for the next ride.
Look at the line of cars on the left!
Thankfully the bus lane is pretty clear! (Perks of taking bus!)

We saw a bunch of hikers (concluded from the humongous bags they were carrying) walking across the causeway. Really salute them for doing that under the scorching sun with no brollies.
Anyway we reached almost the same time as them.

At the msia customs, the faster moving queue would be the one with 2 counters! So you've got to know which queue leads to 2 counters. Usually we'll just make a guess and see if we're lucky XD
And today we were! Cleared msia customs in 45 min thereabouts. Quite fast!

Paik's Pan
Was famished so we ate at city square which was just a bridge across from customs before heading to ksl. Tried Paik's Pan as J wanted to try it. It's like yoogane, just a different brand.
Their wifi password

Had to try a few times before succeeding. There's a minimum order of 2 pax. And we 2, so we just ordered. We ordered 2 types of pork! Spicy and teriyaki. Initially I thought they'd cook it separately, but they just threw everything in.
Just like this
So much vegetables and potato!
They'll cover it and let it simmer for a few minutes. Which they used a timer to time. Quite a good idea to ensure that the food is cooked the same for all.

Around a 10 min wait for the food to be thoroughly cooked coupled with the cheese we added! Enough time for us to finish the 4 side dishes provided.

Side dishes
The salad was quite refreshing. Their salad sauce was nutty, creamy and had sesame oil mixed in. Went really well with the cold sliced cabbage. It'll make u ask for seconds.
Pickles were not bad too. Not too sour but not really my type. J loves it and could finish more.
The seaweed soup was a little salty but overall flavourful.
Kimchi radish was also good! But a little spicy.

Star of the show
Our fried meat with vegetables and cheese!
After the alarm went off, the waiter came promptly to open the covers for us to start eating. The aroma of the spicy pork immediately stood out and enveloped us. We were hungrily waiting to start with our chopsticks at hand. The stringy cheese went really well with the pork. A little salty, sweet and spicy all together! That and complemented with the cabbage which made the dish so much more enjoyable and kept us going for more!
The teriyaki part wasn't too obvious though it could be due it being mixed with the spicy pork.
A very filling dish and something that you can just eat with rice for 3 pax. They'd fry in the rice for you together with the meat too!

Mental note: to have at least 3 pax before eating here.
